Pro DunkerAmerican Dunker

Daniel Castellani, who posts as Dan Dunks, is a 6'3" dunker from Melbourne, Australia. He goes up off two feet from a right-left plant, and he has spent the last few years landing dunks that had not been seen out of that country before.

Basketball came first and everything else followed from it. He started playing at six and stayed with it through primary and high school. He was never particularly interested in track and field, though he performed well whenever he was made to do it, and he credits the bounce to genetics more than anything: both of his parents competed in track and field, which he considers a fairly obvious explanation for where it came from.

Dunking arrived in eighth grade, when he came across footage of Jonathan Clark and Jordan Kilganon and could not process what he was watching. He describes it as seeing things he could not have dreamed of doing, and assumed at the time he never would. He got his first dunk at the end of that same school year at fourteen, and then spent the next several years treating jumping purely as a way to be better at basketball. Becoming a dunker was not a plan.

That changed gradually as the trick dunks started to feel reachable. His first contest was a modest showing, a reverse windmill and a straightforward two-hander, and he has climbed steadily since. Being based in Melbourne means most of his competition is a long flight away, which makes what he has built from Australia more impressive rather than less.
