Coen Carr is a Michigan State forward and, by wide agreement, the best in-game dunker in college basketball. He is the rare player whose dunks change the temperature of a building, and Tom Izzo has joked that they feel like they are worth six points for the momentum they bring.
Carr grew up in Stockbridge, Georgia and started out at Dutchtown High School before transferring to Legacy Early College in Greenville, South Carolina. He was a four-star recruit, and he went viral as a Michigan State commit with a free throw line dunk that spread across the internet well before he ever played a college game.
His freshman year in East Lansing produced one of the more telling stat lines in recent college basketball: 24 of his 41 made field goals that season were dunks, close to 60 percent of everything he scored. He is an elite lob threat with a deep bag of finishes from and around the free throw line, headlined by the pump backscratcher he throws down from the line itself.
Since then he has steadily rounded out the rest of his game, adding a smoother jump shot and more comfort putting the ball on the floor, and his role with the Spartans has grown accordingly. He has drawn genuine NBA draft interest as a result. For pure vertical pop in live competition, against real defenders and with a game on the line, nobody in the college game is doing what he does.
