Jason McCoy, known in the dunk world as JaySmoove, is a 6'1" power dunker from Detroit, Michigan. He goes up off two feet from a left-right plant, and the finishes are violent rather than pretty, which is exactly the reputation he has built.
His route in is unlike anyone else's. McCoy was a competitive swimmer from the age of four until he was twenty-one, swimming at Lincoln College in Illinois and coming away with five medals at nationals. He did not start playing basketball until he was nineteen. The dunking came first and separately: his first one landed just before he turned sixteen, at 5'10", off one foot, in the gym before his first class of the day.
What pulled him toward the rim was watching high flyers rather than playing the game. He grew up on Jason Richardson and Vince Carter and spent hours on T-Dub footage, and says he has never really thought of himself as a basketball player so much as someone who plays basketball for cardio. Structured jump training came at eighteen, the first time he had seen what a real day-to-day program looked like. Unusually for a dunker, he credits much of his power to upper body work rather than heavy squatting.
He broke into events in 2018, finishing top three in a contest in Utah and earning a spot in the dunk show that followed. From there came events in Windsor, Ontario in 2019 and several tours built around dunk contests, skills challenges and three-point shootouts, interrupted by the pandemic and picked back up in 2022. His own favorite dunk from all of it is a windmill over four people.
