Hyrum Fechser is a professional dunker from Utah, a competitor in Shaq's DunkMan League, with a documented 48.5" running vertical. He is 5'9" with a 7'6" standing reach, goes up off two feet from a right-left plant, and his signature is the windmill honeydip.
He came to this from track, not basketball. Growing up near the Utah and Arizona border he never played organized basketball and admits he did not even know all the rules, but the jumping was obvious from early on. He set a Utah 1A state long jump record at 23 feet, has a 6'7" high jump personal best, and has run the 100 meters in 11.48 seconds. Those are the numbers of someone whose sport had simply not found him yet.
His first dunk came at fourteen, after a single eight week plyometric cycle moved his vertical from 29 inches to 35. That is a large jump for eight weeks and an early sign that his body responded to training in a way most do not. The 48.5" came much later, tested at Dunk Camp 2024, and put him in a very small global club of dunkers who have measured above 48 inches at any height, let alone at 5'9".
The turn from track athlete to competitive dunker came from a chance meeting with Jordan Kilganon at a Utah gym. That introduction pulled him into the scene properly, and he has gone from someone who did not know the rules of basketball to a 48-plus inch tester and a DunkMan League signee.
Dunkman League 2026. He competed in Group Stage C on August 4, in a group won by Isaiah Rivera, and took Dunk of the Night despite finishing outside the advancing places. The Dunkman League runs four group stages of six at the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta. The four group winners advance to the World Championship on August 25 along with the four highest scoring non-winners across all groups, for a field of eight and a $500,000 prize.
